Grand Opening Friday May 2, 2003
I began a medieval company, Medieval Kombat,
in 1994 and through the many twists and turns it has taken me (from Fairs, Festivals,
and Feasts), and it has emerged as an excellent educational medium. A few years ago
the Ontario government included the Medieval Times Unit in the grade 4 curriculum.
We were asked into 4 schools in the surrounding area, and elaborated on the
medieval age, bringing in some display items. We decided to access our extensive
knowledge plus we did much studying of the Medieval Age and created a two hour
presentation, called Knight School. The presentation was specifically designed to
cover the Grade 4 curriculum as we used student and teacher volunteers to help
explain the many topics in addition to having many visual aids and having full
participation activities. Two years ago we expanded into one other board and
proceeded to go into 19 schools. Last school year, we travelled across Ontario;
from North Bay to Toronto, Ottawa to Walkerton, totaling 82 schools. The response
from both teachers and students was amazing.
The Medieval Educational
Interactive Realm is located just outside of Hastings Ontario, which
is a perfect town name, in respect to the Battle of Hastings in England
in 1066. The concept of The Realm is to continue to follow the
ideology of our presentation Knight School, as it fills a much needed
void in "Hands On" teaching and learning. Students learn through
various means, some can read a book, others need something more visual
such as pictures, displays or videos while some require a more tangible
method - a "Hands On" approach. This Realm addresses all the
various types of learning. We have reproductions of the Magna
Carta, the Bayeux Tapestry, various pictures of Kings, Queens, and
famous people and also medieval trivia. Students are encouraged
and expected to actively take part in the various stations, which
include:
- Watching a Knight Foot Combat Tournament
- Viewing the "Sword in the Stone" and hearing about the
legend and also other tales of famous people
- Learning a medieval dance and various games
- Learning how to construct chainmail
- Trying on armour and helmets
- Siege Weapons. A working Catapult (under construction)
- Witnessing a falconry demonstration and seeing the birds up close

A medieval character operates
each area. Depending on the area, they will give a brief
description about the topic, and then let the students try the
activity.
Blades of Glory was formed in 1994, and implemented this "Hands On"
form of teaching in 1996. Grades 4 to Grade 12 have been taught.
